Who's who and what's what?!

Interior/Spatial Designer
For bespoke residential work his or her job is exactly the same as an architect, designing both interior and exterior spaces. On larger commercial jobs and public spaces, interior designers generally design interiors only.
Chartered Designer
This is a designer who is a Member or Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD). This isn’t just for Interior Designers it’s an umbrella organization consisting of graphic, textile and product designers.
Interior Architect
A protected title in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, in the UK the term is generally used to emphasize that an Interior Designer should be capable of offering total architectural services for small and medium scale projects.
Interior Decorator
This definition refers not so much to the job title but to how they operate. Interior Designers tend to work for a consultancy fee only, whereas an Interior Decorator supplies a service. Buying in and supplying the client with materials and furniture; making a profit through ‘mark up’ as well as charging a consultancy fee on top. They may even occasionally work as the main contractor.
Design & Build
This describes designers and builders teaming up to provide a one-stop service for the client. Very occasionally the designers are in charge but usually it is the builder who employs the designer. So, remember, in this instance it may be the building driving the design, rather than design driving the building!
Structural Engineer/Consultant
We insist on their appointment on every jobthat requires structural alterations. They will provide detailed designs and proof calculations for Building Control Approval.
Services Engineer/Consultant
They design and write specifications for heating, ventilation, plumbing and electrical systems. We recommend using them on jobs with a value in excess of £150,000 or where any of the above services demands a particular refinement.
Lighting Designer
Interior Designers can design lighting concepts. Services Consultants can specify components, but for real creativity, experience and a detailed lighting scheme we always recommend the services of a Lighting Designer. Lighting is very easy to get wrong and it’s heart-breaking to see a poor scheme diminish a great interior. We recommend allowing £400 upwards for this.
